The Maintenance Man and his Drill

The Maintenance Man and his Drill

The extractor fan on the cooker stopped working. I was reluctant to get it fixed but Mr HW insisted. "We're paying a lot for this villa so we shouldn't settle with things that don't work." I could see his point but I groaned anyway. Most villas here come with a maintenance contract. Sounds flash doesn't it? ...

Got a Hummer? This Playlist is For You!

Back in London, seeing a Hummer was a rare event. In fact when you saw one, it looked out of place in the narrow city roads and you could legitimately have a laugh at the owner's expense. Hummer owners in Dubai tend to be Mssrs Loadsamoney,  Loadsaclout and Loadsadebt but you're ...

Feberal law in the UAE allows employees 30 days off a year after their first year. Typically this is taken as a solid month and used by expats to go back home. My company is in an industrial area in Sharjah. An area where you will see perhaps one or two female faces ...

How to Get a Job in Dubai (and how not to)

We've got some vacancies and I've been interviewing. One applicant looked particularly promising. As he lives in India I emailed him to arrange a telephone interview and called him at the agreed time. The interview went very well. He was enthusiastic, keen and had a great telephone manner. He got to the ...

Your Nationality Matters When Looking for a Job in Dubai

Equal Opportunities haven't arrived in Dubai yet. But I've realised that using Western definitions and ideals to describe Dubai doesn't work. Dubai is built on a different system to Western Democracies - over here the locals are immensely patriotic, you will find no Saturday night entertainment show satirising the ruling family. Tradition ...

Lost in Translation: Did She Really Say That?

Lost in Translation: Did She Really Say That?

Shop assistants in Dubai are very attentive. It's a very admirable quality when you consider they are on their feet all day long, often in shops lying empty for most of the day. I can only imagine how demoralising and mind-numbing the boredom must be. Somehow they manage to stay focused on ...

Why Hotel Apartments Give You Free Slippers

Why Hotel Apartments Give You Free Slippers

Hotel Apartments are extremely popular in Dubai and give you hotel comforts without the claustrophobia. I hadn't heard the term before moving to Dubai, wonder why... don't we have hotel apartments in the UK? A hotel apartment is a furnished suite with a bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. They come in ...

The Mystery of the Missed Call

The Mystery of the Missed Call

In the dim distant past, if I squint hard enough I can remember a time where when the phone rang, you had two choices: Answer it. Don't answer it. If the phone rang off before you got to it, you assumed the caller had misdialed and continued blissfully with your life. But nowadays there's ...

Whether it's a live-in maid or an agency maid who comes once or twice a week, having a maid in Dubai is almost as normal as having a car. In fact the maid culture is so strong in this part of the world that they've even got rules as to who ...

Strange Encounters

When I lived in Aylesbury, one night we had just stopped outside a take-away when a group of 20-somethings rolled out of the pub on the corner. Holding on to each other for support they staggered up the road yelling insults at anyone who crossed their path. A couple of the ...

Implementing a New Blog Delivery Service

Written by Happywitchie on March 16, 2013
Mailchimp: New RSS Delivery Service

Let’s start some monkey business

This post applies to anyone who reads this blog by email or an RSS feedreader because future posts will be delivered to you through a new provider.

If you don’t want to read the whole post, you can skip to the Action Points at the end.

It all started with Google announcing that it is ending its Google Reader service on 1st July 2013. That’s going to affect me since I read a few blogs through the Google Reader.

But while I’ve been scuttling around with everyone else trying to find a suitable service to migrate to, this whole episode has made me revisit the other cloud on the horizon.

Namely, the pending closure of my Feedburner RSS delivery service. Feedburner is part of the Google range of products.

A problem with Feedburner is that ever since Google took it over, they stopped supporting it. Not only did they stop looking at developing new features, they stopped fixing issues too. They have also been sending out hints that they’re closing down Feedburner without actually committing to this decision.

The fact however is that Feedburner has been working in a rickety old way for quite a long time now and I’ve been trying to ignore the very real message that the Feedburner service is also being killed off by Google.

I’m pleased to say that I have found a suitable RSS delivery service that is very much alive and well. I’m going to be changing my email subscribers over to it in the next few days.

ACTION POINTS:

Everyone who currently reads this blog by email will receive new posts courtesy of MailChimp. I’m currently testing the new system in the hope that I can minimise teething woes when the migration takes place.

  • Although the migration will happen automatically, you will probably have to add me to your “Safe Sender” list again.
  • To those who read this blog via a feedreader, please check that you are subscribed via the direct feed address and not the Feedburner address. The correct RSS Address is http://happywitchie.com/feed/

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact me.

Happy Reading!

House with lights Dubai Wedding

This spectacular sight greeted me as I turned the corner from my house. An Emirati neighbour is getting married and as per tradition, the brightly decorated villa announces the wedding to the Emirati community. As well as acting as an official announcement, the lights are an invitation for well-wishers to [...] Read more »

The Mystery of the Underweight Chicken

The Mystery of the Underweight Chicken

There’s a fabulous butcher called Prime Gourmet on Sheik Zayed Road, Al Quoz, that sells great quality meat and a variety of tasty sausages. Unfortunately they only stock lamb and beef. No chicken. So I have to get chicken from the local supermarket where the chicken breasts come pre-packaged in 500g packs. For [...] Read more »

Walking Etiquette: Be Safe When Walking Your Dog

It’s easy to get complacent about your environment when you’re in an exotic new place that’s full of sunshine and new experiences. You settle into a holiday mode where you automatically feel safe. Sadly sexual crimes go on here too and you do sometimes read about women being abducted while [...] Read more »
