A brand new Huskylock s21
Two weeks into the new year – I hope it is treating you well.
I’ve got a lovely box to unpack. A brand new Huskylockâ„¢ s21 overlock machine (also known as a serger).
It’s like January 1st all over again – LOVE the potential waiting there for me. Will I be the next best fashion designer? Have my own shows? Become a household name (even in Victoria Beckham’s house)?
Yes to the first two, no to the third. Fame would be alright if you could stay anonymous… but I digress, I’ll leave that discussion for another day.
Time to get Creative!
Writing, drawing, sewing and all things creative serve a dual purpose in my life. They both energise me and relax me. So I try and create as much time as I can for them.
Tailors are dime a dozen in Dubai apparently and really cheap to boot. Not only do people get their ready-made garments altered, they get their own designs made up too. Isn’t that the best?!
Well, unless my friends are holding out on me, the tailors I’ve tried have been a bit of a let down. See for yourself:
- Image 1 is what a tailor did on a polo shirt I wanted taken up.
- Image 2 is what I did using my regular sewing machine (an 18 year old Brother) and a needle and thread.

Image 1: The tailor didn’t match the thread or sew in a single, straight line

Image 2: My work. I’ve taken care to match the thread and keep it neat and tidy.
Admittedly what I did took me a whole day and was tedious going. But still… I am my father’s daughter: If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing it myself.
It took me a long time to decide which Overlock machine to buy. I did lots of research and the Huskylock family kept ticking all my boxes. I settled on the s21 model because:
- It has a solid reputation with a dedicated army of enthusiasts.
- It has all the main features I was looking for (4 thread, rolled edge, coverstitch, differential feed…)
- It is within my price range.
An overlock makes sewing easier, faster and the finishing more professional. It doesn’t replace a regular sewing machine, it does things that a sewing machine can’t.
I’ll be exploring these things once I unpack the machine and get started.
Where to buy the Huskylock s21 in Dubai
Dubai might be known as a shoppers paradise but I suspect that’s a tourist title. To those of us who live here, we know that if we want something specific it can be a challenge to find. Often we have to ship it in ourselves at considerable expense.
I was in luck. I found my Huskylock in the very first place I looked – Craftland on Beach Road in Jumeriah. As far as I can tell, that’s the only place in Dubai that stocks the Huskylock. They have a few other brands there too.
Craftland offer a free lesson with your machine so you can learn the basics – how to thread it etc. They also offer sewing classes on a range of different techiniqes and skill levels. When you buy a sewing machine, you get a voucher giving you 50% off any class.
My luck was holding out, I happened to get there during a sale and got 15% off.
What I need now is a dressmakers dummy.
Do you sew?
I don’t sew but my mom does and she would really love this machine!
